Asbestos Surveys Refurbishment & Demolition

What is an R+D SURVEY?

A Refurbishment & Demolition Survey, known in the industry as an R+D Survey, should be one of the first steps undertaken in any building works, be it a commercial, industrial or residential project.

Although asbestos was banned in 1999, it remains a potential threat to people living or working in properties built before this date. The extensive use of asbestos means that there are still many buildings across the UK that contain this harmful substance. Disturbing these items during demolition can release asbestos fibres into the air. When these fibres are inhaled, they often cause serious health problems, including mesothelioma and cancer. This is why it’s so important to make arrangements with fully licensed, insured experts who carry sufficient liability insurance and have extensive experience in asbestos testing and removal.

The purpose of an R+D survey is to locate and describe the presence of asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) within the property before any refurbishment work or demolition can take place. In many cases, an asbestos survey is now a legal requirement under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012.

who needs an R+D survey?

Whether you’re planning to modernise, refurbish or demolish a building, you should ensure that any asbestos has been accounted for.
It is strongly advised to have the survey undertaken as early as possible in the process, as certain asbestos materials are categorised as licensed by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), this means that before asbestos removal can commence, a 14-day notification period is mandatory alongside formal notification of works.

What Happens during an R+D Survey?

A refurbishment & demolition survey is an intrusive investigation of the property and can require disruptive techniques in order to check for any asbestos.

It is important that a comprehensive inspection is taken to cover the entire premises, including any currently inaccessible areas. During the inspection, controlled measures will be put in place to prevent the spread of any asbestos-containing debris.

Only after the presence of asbestos has been identified and removed in a safe and secure manner, can the building be declared fit for reoccupation or demolition. We guarantee fully licensed and insured asbestos removal solutions for domestic, commercial and industrial customers throughout the UK.
